Perhaps while your'e putting them away, you could look at the plugs and see what the maximum number of strings which are supposed to be attached together is, and purchase some additional dimmers to keep with the lights for next year.
they tested this on mythbusters! it's not good to have too many strings attached, you could cause a fire!
